Business Performance 2009

The H.C. Starck Group generated sales of € 471 million in 2009, compared with € 857 million in 2008, which shows that it was very severely affected by the worldwide economic crisis. The accelerated destocking throughout the entire supply chain further exacerbated the effects of our customers’ reduced demand. |

While the markets for our products in the electronics industry gradually recovered in the second half of 2009, the markets in the machinery construction and automotive industries remained at a low level throughout the entire year. Plunging raw material prices for molybdenum and other metals also had a negative impact on sales.
In addition to active and comprehensive cost management efforts, the H.C. Starck Group considerably strengthened its sales activities last year. As a result, the market shares in our core businesses were markedly increased. On this basis, the company’s competitive edge will continue to improve.
The first months of 2010 have shown a clear upward trend. Thanks to the economic recovery, the improved cost structure and the successful expansion of our market position the H.C. Starck Group is expecting a significant increase in sales for the full year.
