BORIDES - Conductivity and hardness for use in standard and special applicationsBorides are chemical compounds comprised of the element boron and a second reactant, usually a metallic or non-metallic element. For this reason, metal borides are differentiated from non-metal borides.
H.C. Starck produces an entire range of metal borides. They are characterized by chemical and physical properties that allow them to be used as high-performance materials in a wide variety of (special) applications.
Titanium diboride for hot-pressed composite materials with outstanding electrical conductivityProbably the most important metal boride from a technical perspective is titanium diboride (TiB2). A transition metal boride, it features exceptional hardness, a high melting point, and outstanding electrical conductivity. These properties qualified titanium diboride for use in hot-pressed composite materials with exceptional electrical conductivity. Examples include evaporation boats for continuous aluminum metallization, crucible material for non-ferrous metals, ceramic shell molds used in Hall-Héroult cells in aluminum production and hot-pressed armor plates.
Other borides produced by H.C. StarckRare earth metal borides, such as lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6), are exceptional metallic conductors and outstanding electron emitters. For this reason, they are employed in plasma technology and for high-performance electrodes in electron microscopes, among other applications.
There is hope that in the future magnesium diboride (MgB2) will offer a wide variety of industrial uses, e.g. in superconductive power transmission or as a magnetic energy store. It has superconductive properties with a high transition temperature of 39 Kelvin.
Our wide spectrum of boride products includes chromium (di)boride (CrB, CrB2), zirconium diboride (ZrB2), silicon hexaboride (SiB6) and aluminum diboride (AlB2).
