H.C. Starck Ceramics in Selb (Germany) was founded in 1985 as “Hutschenreuther Technische Keramik” and was integrated into the H.C. Starck Group in 2001.
Today, H.C. Starck Ceramics is a leading producer of advanced technical ceramic powders and parts
with specialist know-how in the engineering and manufacturing of high-end complex parts in small
series production. Our company is one of only a few vertically integrated producers offering both,
ceramics from technical oxide and state-of-the-art non-oxide materials, out of one production site.
Highest material uniformity and quality standards required for sophisticated applications stand at the center of every product solution. We often develop products in a joint engineering approach with customers, taking into account individual requirements and specifications. As a result, H.C. Starck Ceramics has built up comprehensive engineering expertise and strong customer relationships over the last 28 years.
The Business Line Semiconductor is a key growth area for H.C. Starck Ceramics. Ceramic parts have started to replace certain components of the semiconductor manufacturing process which were previously made from aluminum or other high-performance materials. Ceramic parts offer superior material characteristics such as prolonged lifetime as well as heat and corrosion resistance compared to traditional metal and glass-ceramic components.
Today, advanced ceramics find a large and growing number of applications in the semiconductor industry — e.g. in lithography and wafer handling, PVD/CVD as well as plasma etch processing — and have become indispensable for semiconductor manufacturers at state-of-the-art feature sizes of less than 16nm. With the planned introduction of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, ceramics will become even more critical for process stability and yield of semiconductor manufacturers due to their heat and corrosion resistance, stiffness, and high thermal conductivity. In line with this change, we developed critical high-performance ceramic components and spare parts for the semiconductor manufacturing industry.
Our product portfolio within Semiconductor comprises complex light-weight and large high-end ceramic parts made from SiSiC. These parts are used by semiconductor equipment manufacturers in the construction of wafer-processing machinery for current state-of-the-art feature sizes and next generation EUV technology. H.C. Starck Ceramics also offers a wide range of other ceramic materials for additional applications as well as special engineering services.
The Business Line Ceramic Parts integrates the product segments Engineering Parts and Sealing Parts. Within our Engineering Parts
segment, we offer a wide variety of engineered ceramic parts for
diverse end-markets. The unique material characteristics make ceramic
parts extraordinarily versatile when it comes to possible fields of
application. Whereas ceramic components usually do not form the core of a
machine or plant, they do act as critical enablers for the development
of new innovative high-tech applications. Our current Sealing Parts
product portfolio comprises sliding rings and stationary seals as well
as bearing bushes, protection sleeves and thrust bearing rings from
reaction-bonded Silicon Carbide, sintered Silicon Carbide, Silicon
Nitride, and Aluminium Oxide blanks. These parts are mainly used in
pumps, mixers and stirrers, compressors and turbines. They are applied
where, among others, high chemical corrosion and high wear resistance
are required. Key end-markets are the chemical, oil & gas as well as
machine engineering industries
The Business Line Foundry Parts product portfolio comprises a wide range of tubes and other standardised as well as customised advanced ceramic components used in the context of conveying, dosing and controlling of mostly light-metal melts, in particular aluminium.
The Business Line Dental Parts offering is exclusively focussed on serving the dental prosthesis market with pre-sintered dental blanks made from Zirconium Oxide. Thanks to its colour, translucency and special properties (incl. durability, reliability, biocompatibility and very low rejection reaction rates), Zirconium Oxide has proven the best material to manufacture crowns and bridges.
The Business Line Powders comprises H.C. Starck Ceramics’ non-captive powder preparation activities. We supply highest quality, specialty ceramic powders to selected external customers. One of our key strengths is its backward integration into raw material preparation, i.e. the treatment of ceramic powders for the manufacture of advanced ceramics.
We have a long history of successfully developing and preparing advanced, high quality specialty ceramic powders for both internal and external use. Ceramic powders sold to external parties mainly include Silicon Carbide and to a lesser extent Silicon Nitride powders in more than ten different qualities. Ceramic Powders are manufactured as ready-to-press (RTP) and ultrafine (UF) powders.
