NIOBIUM PENTOXIDE (Nb2O5) -  Optimum optical components

Niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) increases both the refractive index of optical glasses and the capacity of multi-layered ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). In contrast to lead oxide, niobium pentoxide poses no health risks.

When niobium pentoxide is added to the glass during the production of optical lenses, the lenses are lighter, thinner and demonstrate greater resilience.

In addition, niobium pentoxide in interchangeable lenses makes them lighter while enabling better performance in digital cameras and mirrorless system cameras. Adding niobium pentoxide to spherical lenses allows the number of lenses in optical elements to be reduced, which makes the components lighter and smaller. When niobium pentoxide is used as a dopant in the production of multi-layered ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), the Curie temperature of the barium titanate substrate can be increased, this enables the best possible temperature stability to optimize capacity.

Top crystal properties and profitable production

As a substrate for surface acoustic wave filters, also known as SAW filters, lithium niobates are found in mobile end devices such as smartphones, tablet PCs, ultrabooks, GPS applications and smart meter. These niobium containing radio frequency filters, ensure precise frequency control, optimized selectivity and reduced distortion.

As a dopant, niobium pentoxide improves the piezoelectric performance of lead zirconate titanate (PZT). Thanks to electronically controlled piezo actors, high-pressure diesel injection enables greater efficiency in the automobile industry due to shorter reaction times. H.C. Starck provides a wide variety compounds (including niobates and oxalates) that are needed as additives for lead zirconate titanate (PZT), the primary substance now in use.

In all of these applications, the high degree of chemical purity of H.C. Starck's niobium pentoxide guarantees the best performance. In addition to the regular particle morphology, H.C. Starck also supplies spherical niobium pentoxides. Due to their good flow characteristics and high settled density, they can be used in other applications as spray powders.

H.C. Starck processes only raw materials from ethically acceptable, conflict-free sources. This also applies for the procurement and processing of niobium. We only purchase raw materials that meet the specifications of the OECD ("Due Diligence Guidelines for Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas"). We use recycling both to ensure a supply of raw materials and to remain independent from fluctuations in supply and price. We are able to reclaim niobium from almost any type of scrap with a niobium content of 1 to 99%. Based on our "closed-loop offer", we accept used, recyclable products that contain niobium from our customers and reprocess them to produce high-performance niobium products.
