The trend toward miniaturization in the electronics industry continues unabated: smaller and smaller devices are expected to provide an ever-increasing level of performance with more and more functions. As a result, the capacitors used in these devices must achieve greater capacitance in smaller spaces. Tantalum capacitors are particularly well suited to this task: anodes made of pressed, sintered tantalum powder provide an extremely high degree of volumetric efficiency.

Sodium-reduced tantalum powder for capacitors with low and medium capacitance

Our tantalum powders with lower specific surface areas (up to approx. 1.5 m2/g) and larger grain sizes, which can be used to manufacture low to medium capacitance tantalum capacitors for medium to high working voltages, are particularly suitable for use in the production of capacitors for consumer electronic devices, where reliability is more important than component size. They are produced from potassium fluorotanatalate (K2TaF7) by means of sodium reduction.

Magnesium-reduced tantalum powder for high-capacitance capacitors

The trend toward smaller and smaller devices with more and more functions, however, demands an increasing number of high-performance capacitors. This is where sodium-reduced tantalum powders reach their limits.

However, by using the magnesium reduction of tantalum oxide, we have succeeded in developing a completely new process for manufacturing high-performance tantalum powders. The magnesium reduction makes it possible to manufacture powders with extremely large surface areas, an extremely homogeneous grain size distribution and an extremely low amount of impurities. These powders are suitable for manufacturing the next generation of tantalum capacitors with extremely high capacitance in an extremely small space.

Tantalum powders and high-capacitance tantalum capacitors are used in the latest portable and multifunctional electronic devices, such as ultrabooks, tablets and smartphones.

High-voltage resistant tantalum powders for maximum reliability

Our high-voltage resistant tantalum powders play an important role in areas where safety and low breakdown rates are highly significant. Here the focus is not on increasing the energy density, but rather on safe and error-free operation over the long term. Such areas include applications in vehicle electronics such as air bag systems, GPS and ABS systems, ignition and engine control modules, as well as aerospace and defense technology. Application examples in the field of medical technology include implantable defibrillators, pacemakers and hearing systems.

Conflict-free, sustainable tantalum supply

H.C. Starck only processes raw materials from ethically acceptable, conflict-free sources. This also applies for the procurement and processing of tantalum. We only purchase raw materials that meet the specifications of the OECD ("Due Diligence Guidelines for Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas"). Our company and its tantalum processing sites are certified in the context of the Conflict-Free Smelter (CFS) Validation Program of the independent Electronics Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC) and the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI).

Thanks to innovative recycling processes, we are able to reclaim tantalum from almost any type of scrap with a tantalum content of 1 to 99 percent, which also ensures the supply of raw materials and provides the customers of our tantalum-recycling program with greater independence from fluctuations in supply and price. As part of our “closed-loop-offer” we also accept used, recyclable tantalum containing products from our customers and reprocess them to produce high-performance tantalum powders.
