TUNGSTEN CARBIDES - When hardness is the point

Tungsten carbide is a high performance material formed from tungsten and carbon. Its most outstanding property is its hardness, which approaches that of a diamond.

Tungsten carbide is primarily used in the production of a wide variety of industrial tools and wear parts that are subject to a great deal of stress. Many high performance processes, such as metal drilling, turning and milling, are only possible with the industrial application of tungsten carbide in carbide tools.

Tungsten carbide with consistently high quality

H.C. Starck provides a wide range of tungsten carbides, from very fine grades with an average grain size of approx. 0.5 µm to very large average grain sizes of approx. 50 µm. Moreover, nanocrystalline tungsten carbides are being tested in new applications and for increasing hardness.

In this way, our customers can rely upon the consistent, high quality of the products we supply, enabling them to produce high quality tools while reducing their own process costs.

Process quality and raw material supply are assured

H.C. Starck is known for excellent quality and expertise gained over many years in the production of tungsten carbide. With modern, advanced systems and processes, H.C. Starck's own production takes raw material to the intermediate product stage as ammonium paratungstate and then on to finished tungsten carbide. In this way, the product quality can be optimized over the entire process chain. Finally, experienced employees with related expertise and our quality management ensure both process and product quality.

H.C. Starck's production processes allow the use of both primary and secondary raw materials. However, to ensure a sustainable supply of raw materials, H.C. Starck focuses mainly on recycling. Almost all tungsten containing residues or used hard metal components, such as drills and milling cutters, can be reworked into new, high quality tungsten carbide. A sophisticated recycling process guarantees that the product made from secondary raw materials is not inferior in any way to that made from primary raw materials. Naturally; H.C. Starck also offers customers recycling services for tungsten products.
