Tungsten carbide from
Tungsten carbide (WC) is a compound of tungsten and carbon. The outstanding characteristic of this material is its hardness, which approaches that of diamond. Tungsten carbide is used primarily in the production of industrial tools and wearing parts that are subject to significant stress. Tungsten carbide in carbide tools makes processes such as the drilling, grinding, and milling of metals much more effective and economical.
Applications for tungsten carbide
Cutting tools made of hardmetal
- Indexable inserts
- Round tools such as drills and milling machines
Wear parts made of hardmetal
- Drawing tools
- Dies and punches
- Rolls
Carbide components for mining and construction
- Tips and pins for chisels and drill bits
Tools in oil and gas exploration
- Drill bits
Wide range of grades and application support
H.C. Starck Tungsten Powders produces a wide array of high-quality tungsten carbides from ultrafine grades ranging from grain sizes under 0.5 µm to very coarse qualities with average grain sizes of approx. 70 µm.
Tungsten carbide, DN | nano to ultrafine, deagglomerated tungsten carbide powders with narrow grain size distribution |
Tungsten carbide, DS | finest to fine, deagglomerated tungsten carbide powders with narrow grain size distribution |
Tungsten carbide DS LS | like tungsten carbide DS, with improved press properties and low shrinkage |
Tungsten carbide, DM | deagglomerated tungsten carbide powders of medium size, with uniform particle size distribution and low proportion of large particles and agglomerates |
Tungsten carbide, MAS | extra coarse, high temperature carburized tungsten carbide powders |
Process quality and raw material supply
H.C. Starck Tungsten Powders stands for excellence and decades of expertise in tungsten carbide manufacturing. The processing is done in house with the help of modern plants and procedures, from the raw material and the intermediate product ammonium paratungstate (APT) to the finished tungsten carbide. This enables us to guarantee the quality of the product at an early stage and make additional optimisations over the entire process chain. Our production process allows us to make equal use of primary and secondary raw materials (residual materials containing tungsten). To ensure a sustainable and secure supply of raw materials H.C. Starck Tungsten Powders relies primarily on recycling. With the help of this process, we can rework almost all industrial residual materials containing tungsten into new, high-quality tungsten carbide, and we can do the same for used carbide components, such as inserts, drills and mills. The quality of products from secondary raw materials is absolutely identical to that of products from primary raw materials. As our customer, we offer you tungsten product recycling as a service.
